In Italy, the hour before dinner has its own name: aperitivo. A light, bittersweet drink, something salty to nibble, and no rush. It is an easy ritual to borrow.

The idea

Aperitivo is meant to open the appetite, not fill you up. The drinks are light and often bitter, and the snacks are small and salty.

Three drinks to start with

Aperol Spritz: three parts Prosecco, two parts Aperol and a splash of soda water, over ice, with an orange slice. Light, orange and easy.

Campari and soda: equal parts Campari and soda over ice. Bitter, bright and very refreshing if you enjoy bitterness.

Negroni: equal parts gin, Campari and sweet vermouth, stirred over ice. The stronger, bolder choice.

Snacks that belong

  • Green olives and salted almonds.
  • Potato chips and breadsticks.
  • A few slices of cured ham or a small piece of hard cheese.

Make it zero-proof

A bitter, non-alcoholic aperitif with tonic and an orange slice gives the same ritual without the alcohol. Ask the Tipsy Juniper guide for a favorite.

The real secret

Sit down, put your phone away, and give it half an hour. The drink matters less than the pause.
